Shear strength of unsaturated soil under laboratory and theoretical calculations

Abstract: The results of shear strength parameters of soils from Szymbark Winiary are presented in the paper. Determination of the influence of moisture content on values of shear strength of tested soils was the subject of the test. The second aim of paper was comparison results of theoretical calculation of shear strength using semi-empirical methods for evaluation of shear strength of unsaturated soils (Vanapalli et al. [1996], Matsushi and Matsukura [2006]) and results of direct shear strength tests. Results of tests revealed that the increase of moisture content causes decrease in shear strength and shear strength parameters of tested soils. Calculations of shear strength revealed that values of soil resistance determined using Matsushi-Matsukura method give good agreement with results of shear tests.
