MATHEMATICAL MODELING OF ICE BOOMS

Number of technical and non-technical methods has been proposed to prevent ice jams to form on rivers which could be distinguished as active and passive methods. The first group requires human intervention [or power] to be effective during the neutralization of the ice jam event. Icebreakers or other technical equipment is usually used for ice jam operation. The second group typically include ice control structures in a form of piers or floating ice booms and is usually more effective. They generally help to stabilize ice cover by providing anchor points between which the ice spans. Some reduce the average water velocity in stream or river to improve the chances that an ice cover will form. Floating ice booms are installed before the winter season only. The decision to build an ice control structure should be proceeded by detailed theoretical analysis and mathematical modeling. In a paper all threshold parameters for ice ruble stabilization has been provided. Also model application to the real case has been added together with results of the numerical calculations.
